The Board of the Cape York Partnership has appointed Professor Marcia Langton and Danny Gilbert as co-chairs of the organisation.

Cape York Partnership, founded by Indigenous leader Noel Pearson, has driven major Indigenous policy changes across Cape York with an emphasis on education, the Indigenous economy, community-building and ending passive welfare.

Noel Pearson, the current chairman, said Marcia Langton and Danny Gilbert will provide new drive and energy to the work of Cape York Partnership.

“Both Danny and Marcia are long-time supporters of our work and have both chaired the Cape York Institute in the past.

“They bring with them a passion and commitment to the Cape York agenda, and I have no doubt that under their chairmanship the Partnership will continue to make a significant contribution to communities in the Cape and to the broader policy agenda.”

Marcia Langton, Professor of Australian Indigenous Studies at the University of Melbourne, said she is excited about the opportunities it provides for further developing and implementing major reform.

“I am keen to contribute to the vision for Cape York and create opportunities for the people of the Cape. There is great potential for economic development led by Aboriginal people of Cape York Peninsula. The Cape York Partnership approach is innovative and sound and supports the entrepreneurs in the communities of the Cape. The Tribal Wealth Review will further enhance these opportunities.”

Danny Gilbert said that under Noel Pearson’s leadership the Cape York Partnership has established important foundations to improve the lives of people in the Cape, particularly in relation to welfare reform, education, community-building, economic development and job creation.

“I want to play a part in helping build on those foundations and doing what I can to ensure Indigenous people enjoy all that Australia has to offer its citizens, while maintaining their identity and culture as Australia’s First Peoples.”
