Gilbert + Tobin welcomes the release of Australian journalist Peter Greste. Gilbert + Tobin is delighted to confirm that, after 400 days, journalist Peter Greste has been released from jail in Egypt pursuant to an application made on Peter’s behalf by Gilbert + Tobin to the President of the Egyptian Arab Republic, and after diplomatic representations made by the Commonwealth of Australia.

A Gilbert + Tobin team led by partner Chris Flynn acted as international counsel for Mr Greste.

Chris’ team included Special Counsel Stephanie Wee and lawyers Ryan Turner and Samer Aljanabi.

Gilbert + Tobin was also assisted by Adjunct Professor, Dr Christopher Ward, a Barrister specialising in international law at St James’ Hall Chambers in Sydney.

Chris Flynn commented,

“We’re so pleased for Peter and his family that he is once again a free man. Peter, and journalists like him, play such an important role in the democratic process and ensuring transparency. As lawyers, these values are consistent with our own at Gilbert + Tobin. It has been our pleasure and privilege to assist in securing his freedom. Our very best wishes go to Peter and all of his family. We look forward to Peter once again picking up his pen and doing what he loves as soon as he is ready.”

Gilbert + Tobin has worked closely with the Commonwealth Government through this process.

We would like to give special thanks to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (and in particular, Justin Brown), the Office of the Foreign Minister (in particular, the Foreign Minister and Chief-of-Staff Murray Hansen) for their assistance and support in securing Peter’s release. Thanks also to former Deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer for his counsel through the process.

We also hope for, and look forward to, the prompt release of Peter’s colleagues, Mohamed Fadel Fahmy and Baher Mohamed.
