In this role Paul acts as a litigation specialist ’legal help desk,’ helping to resolve difficult or unusual issues that arise in the day to day conduct of commercial litigation. Paul also creates and presents learning and development sessions and writes material for Gilbert + Tobin's in-house knowledge database.

Paul holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand, and has practised as a litigation solicitor and advocate in Sydney since 2001.

Prior to joining Gilbert + Tobin Paul worked for about 5 years in a specialist commercial litigation and advocacy firm. Amongst other work, during that time Paul acted in proceedings relating to:

  • breaches of contract

  • construction law

  • Corporations Act obligations

  • criminal law

  • debt recovery

  • defamation

  • enforcement / recovery

  • geotechnical issues / nuisance

  • industrial relations / employment

  • insolvency

  • intellectual property

  • land law

  • partnerships

  • personal injury

  • professional disciplinary matters

  • professional negligence

  • tax issues

  • Trade Practices Act obligations

Paul has also worked in contract roles for both the state and federal governments, the former specialising in employment-related issues and the latter assisting in the cross-examination stage of major civil penalty proceedings. He is the co-author of 2 chapters of a well-known civil litigation online publication.

Paul enjoys public speaking, refereeing and watching rugby and a variety of other outdoor pursuits. One day he hopes to own the winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup.
