First Nations Employment

Each year, we invite First Nations law students to apply for the Gilbert + Tobin First Nations Cadetship Program. Cadetships are offered in our Sydney, Melbourne and Perth offices and are an opportunity to gain diverse experience across different practice areas.

Gilbert + Tobin’s First Nation Cadetships are a fantastic introduction to life in a law firm for law students at any stage of their degree. You will join a cohort of 15 cadets all working part-time, one to two days per week, for the duration of your studies. You’ll participate in a staggered program of work experience that is responsive to your level of experience, including working as a research assistant and paralegal. Through on-the-job-learning, mentoring, structured training programs, and both internal and external events, there’s no shortage of personal and professional development opportunities on offer.

Why have an Indigenous Cadetship Program?

Reconciliation with Australia’s First Nations people has been part of the fabric of Gilbert + Tobin since our inception. The aim of our cadetship program is to address the underrepresentation of First Nations peoples in the legal profession. A 2020 survey of the legal profession conducted by the NSW Law Society found that First Nations people make up 0.8% of the legal professional nationally and yet they comprise 3% of the population. We encourage cadets to explore careers as practicing lawyers and will work closely with you to explore graduate employment options in the legal profession.

Who should apply?

We welcome applications from First Nations Australian law students at all universities provided you’re able to work in-person from either of Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth offices. For more information contact Kimberley Peckham kpeckham@gtlaw.com.au.

An inside look at G+T’s Cadetship Program

Having joined G+T via the 2020 Indigenous Cadetship, getting a clerkship here was a dream come true. I was so thrilled that all the hard work had paid off and I was going to be clerking at a firm I had great amounts of respect for.  I was given invaluable training, I worked on interesting matters, I was challenged, I was supported, I was inspired, and I made friends that I truly believe I will have for life.

I began the clerkship in Corporate Advisory and loved it immediately. My second rotation was in Competition + Regulation. It took me a little longer to find my feet in this team but the people I worked with were very supportive and took time to explain the basics. I’m a country girl and am the first person in my family to go to university but not once have I felt out of place. This is what I believe makes G+T truly special; the firm has a culture of acceptance I haven’t experienced anywhere else.
