Fishing by subpoena in the rising ocean of communications ‘metadata’: A debate yet to start

Mandatory data retention for communications services has engendered criticism and controversy in many countries. Pervasive and extensive communications data collection and retention has been stated by many Governments, including the Australian Government, as necessary to address new threats of internet facilitated terrorism, child exploitation and human trafficking.
