Biography

    Chris is a partner in Gilbert + Tobin's Energy + Infrastructure group.  

    He one of Australia’s leading energy and infrastructure lawyers and strategic advisors. He is an energy and critical infrastructure specialist. His experience spans complex M&A, project development and cross-border joint ventures. His experience extends to energy, data, defence, space, and telecommunications.

    He has worked in over 60 countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, Europe and in Africa. He is particularly experienced in matters involving complex regulatory issues, including FIRB. Previously, he was co-head of Energy and Power (APAC), and global co-head of Sovereign Energy at a leading global law firm.

    Chris holds a Master of Letters from the University of St Andrews (taken as a Chevening Scholar), a Master of Laws (International Law) from the University of Sydney and Bachelors degrees in Law (Honours) and Commerce (Accounting and Finance) from Griffith University.  He also studied at the University of Salamanca (as an Ambassadorial Scholar). 

    He is a member of the Advisory Board, Law Futures Centre at Griffith University. 

    Chris is admitted to practice in New South Wales, Queensland, and England and Wales.

    Chris’s experience includes advising:

    • EIG/MidOcean on its AUD 18.4 billion joint bid with Brookfield for Origin Energy Limited*.
    • EIG/MidOcean on its USD 2.2 billion acquisition of a portfolio of LNG assets from Tokyo Gas*.
    • FRV on the 50% sell-down of its Australian and New Zealand renewable energy business to Canadian pension fund OMERS, and the design and structuring of their related joint venture arrangements.
    • Sun Cable on the design, structuring and implementation of its landmark solar power production, transmission and export project from Australia to Singapore (including as to project bankability, offtake and intergovernmental and host government arrangements)*.
    • A short listed, final bidder on its bid to acquire Tilt Renewables, valued at approximately NZD 3 billion.
    • TasNetworks on its arrangements regarding Marinus Link with Victoria, Tasmania and the Commonwealth*.
    • Qube Logistics in respect of its bulk storage and handling arrangements and rekated joint venture at the Port of Newcastle.
    • Kumul Petroleum Holding Ltd on is acquisition of additional interests in PNG LNG from Santos Ltd*.
    • Bernard Collaery, the former Attorney-General of the ACT and lawyer for Timor L'este, in relation to his criminal charges under the Intelligence Services Act 2001, along with partner Kate Harrison at Gilbert + Tobin. The case involved important issues as to the application of Australia's national security laws. It was Australia’s longest running and most complex national security case.
    • A bidder on its 'first in market' innovative solutions to supply the South Australian and the New South Wales governments with 100% of its electricity supply requirements from a renewable portfolio.
    • Eni S.P.A. on its USD 2.6 billion acquisition, with Var Energi ASA, of Neptune Energy*.
    • Total Energies on its USD 900 million acquisition of OMV’s 50% interest in SapuraOMV*.
    • The State of Papua New Guinea and its national petroleum company, Kumul Petroleum, on negotiations with ExxonMobil (as operator) and its joint venture partners on the multibillion-dollar development of the P'nyang gas field, including a third train alongside the existing USD 19 billion PNG LNG project, and across from Total SA on the USD 15 billion Papua LNG Project.* Harbour Energy on its $14.4 billion proposed acquisition of Santos Limited.
    • Jemena on several market-leading energy transition projects in Australia, including the Western Sydney Green Gas Project in New South Wales (one of Australia's first green hydrogen gas projects), the new gas lateral pipeline to connect to Australia's first LNG import terminal at Port Kembla, New South Wales, and the Malabar Biomethane Project in New South Wales (Australia's first biomethane-to-gas project).
    • Beach Energy Limited on its AUD 1.585 billion acquisition of Lattice Energy Limited (Origin’s conventional upstream oil and gas business) from Origin Energy Limited (together with multiple related long term gas offtake arrangements).
    • EIG/Harbour Energy on its AUD 14.4 billion bid to acquire Santos Limited.
    • A bidder on the landmark South Australian first-in-world 100MW Grid Connected Battery project.
    • CVC Capital Partners, The Carlyle Group and Neptune Energy on the Australian component of Neptune Energy’s USD 3.9 billion acquisition of Engie’s upstream oil and gas business.
    • Total SA on its participation in, and certain of the arrangements (including the application of the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism) relating to, the GLNG facility (including key gas supply arrangements).
    • The Government of Papua New Guinea and Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (Papua New Guinea’s national oil company) on a range of transactions and legislative and regulatory reform initiatives (including with respect to gas supply and transportation). 
    • ENGIE on swap arrangements with Origin Energy relating to the Pelican Point power station in South Australia under which Origin supplies gas to Pelican Point and ENGIE provides power to Origin (to supply South Australian customers).
    • Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (Papua New Guinea’s national oil company), on a range of transactions, and legislative and regulatory reform initiatives (including with respect to gas supply and transportation).
    • KKR in respect of a number of its proposed investments in upstream oil and gas assets and exploration and production companies in Australia and regionally.
