Overview and experience

Morelle is a lawyer in Gilbert + Tobin’s Competition + Regulation group. Morelle has a broad legal practice, having significant experience in both competition law and regulatory work.

Morelle has extensive merger experience, having advised clients in a number of complex transactions, including transactions involving the acceptance of court-enforceable undertakings by the ACCC. She also has extensive experience in authorisations and investigations and regularly provides advice on competition law issues associated with commercial arrangements.

Morelle’s regulatory practice includes advising on energy and telecommunications regulation. Morelle has acted for a leading gas infrastructure company in merits review proceedings before the Australian Competition Tribunal and the Western Australian Electricity Review Board. Morelle has also acted for a leading telecommunications carrier on a number of fixed line telecommunications inquiries and determinations.

Prior to joining Gilbert + Tobin in 2010, Morelle worked at the ACCC for four years where she gained considerable experience analysing the competitive effects of mergers. In particular, Morelle managed merger reviews in a range of industries including financial services, mining, manufacturing, energy, telecommunications, information technology and media. Morelle also worked in the Communications Group where she worked on a number of major projects, including the access pricing principles review, exemption inquiries for fixed line services, and the digital radio access regime.

Prior to her time at the ACCC, Morelle worked as an economist at the Productivity Commission, where she worked on public inquiries related to energy and waste management.

Morelle’s prior experience at the ACCC as well as her strong economic skill set enables her to bring a commercially realistic and strategic approach to her work.

Qualifications and recognition

Morelle is admitted as a solicitor of Victoria, having obtained her Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce (First Class Honours in Economics) at The University of Melbourne.

Morelle is a regular contributor to publications. She most recently co-authored two journal articles on merger counterfactuals with Danielle Wood, a senior economist at the ACCC, in the Competition and Consumer Law Journal. She is currently writing a textbook on Access Regulation with Catherine Dermody and Geoff Petersen, which is expected to be published in 2014-15.
