EnergyCo, in its capacity as the NSW statutory infrastructure planner, has selected Ausgrid as the preferred network operator for the Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).
On 17 December 2024 both parties entered into formal agreements for Ausgrid to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the Hunter-Central Coast REZ transmission network.
Ausgrid's proposal includes significant upgrades to the existing infrastructure, which has a lower impact on surrounding communities while delivering the capacity to transfer 1 gigawatt (GW) of network transfer capacity.
Together, with Ausgrid and EnergyCo, the Hunter-Central Coast REZ will play a key role in New South Wales’ renewable energy future, powering existing industries and emerging technology.
Gilbert + Tobin have worked closely with the Ausgrid deal team in reaching this important milestone for the Hunter-Central Coast REZ. The project will be a significant step forward in NSW’s and Australia’s goals of achieving net zero.
Gilbert + Tobin are pleased to have advised on all legal aspects of the transaction, including negotiating and assisting with finalising key project documents, subcontracts, undertaking due diligence for the project, and providing expert advice on the regulatory aspects of the project.
We look forward to further assisting Ausgrid and its partners in this monumental deal.
Energy, Resources and Infrastructure Partner Alexander Danne led the project delivery transaction and energy regulatory advice was led by Regulatory Partner Geoff Petersen.
Alexander and Geoff were supported by Energy, Resources and Infrastructure Partners Zac Kerr and Kon Nakousis, and lawyers Chi Han Yeo, Daniel Solomon, Michal Magat, Tiffany Chan, Sophie Pinkus and Lauren Trute. The due diligence authors included Property Partner Nick Lazarou, Planning & Environment Partner Ben Fuller, and Employment and Disputes Partners Dianne Banks and Tom Brett.
Alexander commented: “We are excited to be supporting Ausgrid and its partner EnergyCo on this important energy transition project. We wish all stakeholders all the best for a successful project over the coming commitment deed phase".
Geoff commented: “This is one of the first projects to be pursued under the bespoke new regulatory regime for REZ development in NSW. We are very excited to have been involved in this cutting-edge project and look forward to seeing it through to successful completion".
