G+T has supported Transport for NSW on the ticketing and bus technology components of Opal 2.0, the NSW Government’s $820 million modernisation of the state’s public transport payment and information systems.

Opal 2.0 will introduce digital Opal cards, a new Opal app, 25,000 new readers, better real-time service information and digital information screens on 5,000 buses. The project has been described by the NSW Government as the biggest overhaul of the ticketing system since Opal launched 13 years ago.

G+T advised Transport for NSW on both the ticketing and bus solution components of the program, supporting the technology arrangements that will underpin a more modern and connected passenger experience across rail, metro, bus, light rail and ferry services.

Transport for NSW has appointed INIT to deliver the account-based ticketing system and Trapeze Group to deliver bus solution technology.

Simon Burns said:

I first worked on the Opal program around 15 years ago, so it was brilliant to have the trust of the TfNSW team with Opal 2.0. This is infrastructure and technology that passengers will engage with every day. It brings together complex transport and payments-related systems, a broad range of fixed and on-vehicle infrastructure assets and live service information in a way that will help reshape how people move across NSW.
