2020 ended up being (we hope) a unique year, but Australia has fared comparatively well through the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ACCC and Australia’s competition and regulatory regime have demonstrated their flexibility to respond to new challenges thrown up by the pandemic, such as a huge increase in urgent interim authorisations allowing businesses to coordinate in ways that might otherwise be prohibited.

COVID-19 has also accelerated existing trends towards digitisation, and it’s not surprising that governments are sharpening their existing focus on digital platforms and services. We expect this to continue in 2021.
