Biography

    Elizabeth is a senior partner and the group leader in Gilbert + Tobin's Competition, Consumer + Market Regulation group.

    Her practice includes advising on enforcement litigation and investigations, merger clearances and ongoing strategic/operational advisory work, as well as compliance training. Her practice spans a broad range of industries, including financial services, the digital economy, infrastructure, health and life sciences. She has a particular focus on multijurisdictional matters.

    Prior to joining Gilbert + Tobin, Elizabeth was an antitrust lawyer in the New York office of Weil, Gotshal and Manges LLP for 7 years, advising on litigation, government investigations, mergers and other advisory work, with clients across a broad range of industries, including in securities markets, private equity, credit cards, hotels and airlines.

    Elizabeth’s global reputation is recognised through her appointment as Vice President of the American Bar Association’s International Antitrust Committee and she is regularly invited to speak internationally on Australian competition law.

    Elizabeth has great depth and breadth of experience providing financial services regulatory advice and is frequently sought out for strategic advice in complex matters as well as providing thought leadership insights. Elizabeth is recognised as a leading lawyer in major legal directories and held in high regard by clients, who report: “Elizabeth Avery and her team provide outstanding advice on highly technical points and are consistently commercially driven whilst remaining responsive to client needs.” and “Elizabeth is a leader in her field.” (Chambers Asia-Pacific, 2024).

    Elizabeth obtained a Master of Laws from New York University, where she won the antitrust prize. She also holds a BA and LLB (Honours) from the University of Sydney. Elizabeth is admitted to the bar of New York, and also as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and the High Court of Australia.
